At first, a standard known as ‘IFAX (T.37)' was developed for fax machines to communicate directly with e-mails. Faxes are usually sent as an attachment to a mail. An IFAX machine first compose an e-mail message, which is then sent to a fax gateway and then to phone line ultimately reaching the traditional fax machine at destination.

To send fax via email, we should have an Internet Fax Service, commonly known as ‘TMC'. This service allows us to compose a FAX message which is based on either a web format or simply an e-mail format along with an attachment. This attachment is nothing but the facsimile itself. The e-mail should contain fax machine number of the recipient and cover-page text. TMC is also able to send rich text such as pictures, graphics along with text, to a destination. If the fax is not sent, a failure notification will be sent to the sender.
